The early shift leavers had a rubber? nylon ball on the ent of the gear
leaver into a steel cup shaped hole in the remote selector rod. the last
cars had a steel ball on the ent of the gear leaver and a plastic lined hole
in the selector rod .I thint this was a replacible part.
The ball is actually egg shaped wth the narrower end pointing down, to give
a progressive movement to the selector rod over a longer forward/backward
movement needed.
The finger into the selestor rods also has a rubber covered ball the is
barrel shaped  ie flat on the bottom.
this was presumaby to stop any rattles
