[ROVERNET - UK] "Restoring" Rovers, Market Value, et cetera

Guys,

It would be interesting to see some cars with prices that they actually
SOLD for. Asking prices do not set the market price. Selling prices do.
And if the cars are unique, it isn't even a market price then.

"Uncontrolled ammounts of $$$$ have been spent and all for your pleasure."

In the USA we had a member who had spent $40,000 USD on a P4. Someone
correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this one last changed hands for
$8,000 USD.

"Unique. Custom 5.0 litre Rover V8. Classic connelly leather. Factory
electric sunroof. Only one of its kind."

This one is apparently unique, but I'd still say the price is silly. I
don't care how much the seller spent on the car.

"A chap from San Diego is having his 67 Rover 2000TC rebuilt with a nut
and bolt restoration up here at the world famous Guild of Restoration
and he will have spent well over $100,000.00 when it is complete."

Some people have more dollars than neurons, don't you know.

Not only that, but cars that have been "restored" to this degree turn my
stomach. The car may have all of the right bits bolted together, and it
might even have similar carpet, but it is in no way ORIGINAL. It was not
assembled by Rover craftsmen using the materials and techniques used by
the Rover Company. It does NOT represent the typical condition or
quality of the car when it left the factory in Solihull. It has become a
CLONE without character. No one bought this car new in a showroom and
proudly drove it home. No one drove his daughter to her first day of
school in it. No one loved it and pampered it over the course of years.
No patina. No character. No one would alter the Mona Lisa by stripping
the canvass clean and "restoring" it a higher standard than Da Vinci was
able to achieve at his "factory." Repair it, clean it up, and appreciate
it for what it truly is.

A bit of this, a bit of that...
