Hi Nelson,

I had a look at the parts books, and it looks like you need a top
compression ring from a 1955 to 1959 '75', '90' or '105' (or a 1954 90)
-- part number 233586. The '54 and earlier 75 has a different part number.

1960 and later P4 and P5 engines used part number 231155 for both the
top and the middle rings, so I assume (but don't know for sure) that
these would not work.

Do you still have the 110 too? I still remember the ride in the 110
from downtown San Diego up to the auto museum several years ago.

To Steve Manwell,
Yes i still do have my P4 Rover 110, stills runs, take it out once in awhile, thru all this time, i had about 20 other rover cars , still in need of glass for my Cyclopes. I have acquired? 10 rovers back up and running on the road that i fixed, car just sitting and rotting? away owners not know where to get parts and as me being a mechanic i do what i can, as for a Rover ethicist and club member i say i do my part in the Rover world.

? Steve how are you doing?

? As for the piston Rings i was kinda avoiding the overseas stuff, Yes, Wadhams do sell a entire new set. I might do that, but if anyone out there has an engine as spares or parts new or used.? Thanks for the info RoverNetters

Other than that and the carpet, though, it might be solid?

We have a Rover 100 engine and overdrive gearbox. Later than the 105S,
these were out of a 1960 model. I believe the g'box is identical, and
the engine is similar, larger bore, shorter stroke, but visually
virtually identical apart from the inlet manifold and carburettors, and
if I'm not mistaken, pretty much a direct bolt-in replacement. Located
in Warkworth (nr. Peterborough) Ontario, if that's not too far from you.

Cheers,

Bill Daddis

Left is the shorter rod, I took it off and adjusted it to make it shorter, but still didn't work Any ideas??? Its not the wheel cylinders the two pullers that connect to rods work fine.

there something all people forget about P4 & P5 handbrakes that is
critical to their ability to work.
I took a friends car on a holiday that had been "fully service by
reputable garage .I wouldn't hold on a hill.When I got home that nite I
checked & sure enough it had the same problem ,
The hand-brake mechanism is mounted on the brake cylinder.this is
mounted on the backing plate with special washers that act like springs
so that the cylinder is free to move.
The nuts should be done up till they are tight then undone two complete
turns so that the cylinder can move to align the brake-shoes.
Pull the hand brake on a couple of times, then, readjust the square
compensator .
When I did this on the car we were using ,I had to do the adjuster up 5
clicks on 2 side & 8 on the other.
Now the hand brake was fully on at 4 clicks & just about stalled the car,

Hi all,

A fellow Rover SD1 owner has asked me to post word that there is a complete
Rover P6B at the Pick-a-Part in L.A. Valley (Roscoe and Hwy 5). It is
reportedly free of dents/rust, has a nearly new interior and the motor is
still in place.

I'm told that Alvin Castle (323.239.6100) can provide more details about
the car, should someone be interested.

Hi Folks
I must apologize to the gentleman that provided the solution to my rear brake issue, for I have forgotten his name. Thank you all the same. I had tried just about everything, w/cyl working, swivels free and I even adjusted the rods. Still no hand brake. Then I received an email suggesting I loosen the wheel cylinders one full turn on the back plates. My first reaction was, no that wouldn't work. I remembered the Austin A60's had sliding rear wheel cyl and if it stuck the hand brake didn't work. However, I could'nt see how that applied to a P4, the cylinders fit snug into the back plate. I went to the manual, and sure enough same advice there. I freed the three cyl retaining nuts one full turn. Guess what? my brake now works. So it pays to heed the advice provided on the Rovernet. Now if it would just stop snowing and allow spring to begin I might be able to get the Rover back out on the road,
Cheers Ben (irishrover) PS - Happy Saint Patrick's day on 17th March

The car is quite familiar, but I'll be blessed if I can think where it
was parked when this photo was taken...

Hi all Last fall on my last outing the car developed a good chain rattle at idle.......for all who may recall in the summer i had the throttle hang wide open and ruin the cam, the cam housing and couple of tappets, etc......i rebuilt it and had an uneventful summer. I figured the chain noise was the bottom chain tensioner since i had not touched the bottom end, except removing the sump to clean it and retrieve the carnage. Much to my surprise when i took off the oil cap and shone a flashlight in to find no top chain tensioner. I removed the valve cover and found the chain tensioner wedged down the side of the chain. I fished it out and lo and behold the metal part was there but no black bakelite piece ( or whatever the material the part that rides the chain is made of). It had come right off the metal housing........it appears to be glued on with some sort of adhesive..........The top tensioner was brand new when i put the head back on in the summer........It was an MG one but still had the spring with the allen ratchet..........Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue .......I will be installing another new one tomorrow........An aside to help other tensioner troubled Rovernuts......If you super glue the backing plate to the tensioner you ease your stress levels when trying to install through the inspection hole the without removing the head.

I'll be putting a set of 2000TC trim strips on my P6B (yes, heresy, I
know) and wonder if anyone knows a possible source for the plastic clips
that hold the strips to the doors, fenders, etc. I was contemplating
making some from brass shim stock and 6-32 brass screws, but getting
inside the doors to put the nuts on looks like being a bit awkward.

Re that rather dramatic wide-angle photo of my car that Lance posted the
link to, I think it must have been taken near New Hope, Pennsylvania
when we were on holiday near there in April 2010. The photographer
appears to be based in that area.

Are you using the 3500S wide ones? If so, I have some NOS factory ones. if
you are 2000 using narrow ones, I have some non original ones that you
install with a pop rivet that will work. Contact me at jaguru at bellsouth.net

The black bit isn't bakelite, it's something like nylon. Basic problem, I'm sure, is that the tensioners are now made offshore (probably India) and you've run afoul of some poor quality control. I've never seen that myself.

And what I do to hold the tensioner together (presuming it has the retractor) is just smear it with wheel bearing grease. If I have to use a tensioner without a retractor, I just tie a bit of string around it. Even if the string gets away from me when I cut it, it will not cause any problem in the sump.

Yours
Vern

Hi Bill,
Not that it makes any difference in this case, but I don't think the
trim strip holes in the bodywork are at the same height on TC and 3500S,
so your TC trim on a 3500S will not be in exactly the same place as it
would be on the TC. The difference isn't much and probably won't be
noticeable. I may have some clips, but will have to pull a strip off a
car to see for sure what they look like.

In case anyone is looking for a set of the narrow (NAS-TC/Swiss market)
trim strips like Bill is using, I have both full sets and partial
sets...not cheap though.

Roverly,
Kent K.

Bill,
Ben Saunders here. I have gotten a set of clips for the 3500S brights off
Ebay UK and I remember seeing the ones for the 2000 there as well. I have a
set of the 3500S NADA side chrome (SS) if you want them just let me know.

Hi Kent,

Many thanks for that bit of wisdom. As it happens, it is rather
pertinent since I was planning to use a right rear door from a TC to
replace a rusted-through one on the 3500. I figured there would be some
issues fitting the 3500's window frame and mechanism, but it would have
been extremely tedious to offer up a nicely repainted door just to find
out that the trim strips don't line up. I measured the distance to the
mounting holes from the bottom of the door, and those on the TC are
about 3/8" higher. They are a bit too high for them to be covered by
the strip, so would have to be filled. In light of this, I'm going to
see if we have a rust-free 3500 door -- it might just be less bother.

Thanks to everyone who offered a set of the wider 3500S strips. I do
have a set, but want to use the narrower strips as were fitted to some
European-spec 3500s, simply because I like the look of them better.

I've decided that this is the year to deal with the restoration of the
3500's exterior, so I want to get as many of my ducks set up in a row
before I get to work on it.

Cheers,

  -- Bill D.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Bill.
There's a growing problem with the quality of old-school classic car parts. Since their original manufacturing bases have now long gone, many of these items are now made in "developing countries" and they are often nothing more than cheap-quality clone copies. The problem first seems to have surfaced in the area of ignition and electrical parts [e.g. points, condensors, dizzy caps, rotors and voltage regulators] about 7-8 years ago.
Sadly it can only get worse.

Anybody ever hear of it?

Thanks.

Albert

Perkins has always been a separate company, but the Perkins Prima was used in several Austin cars during the eighties and early nineties. The Rover L-series diesel was reportedly derived from the Perkins unit and was used in Rover diesel cars from the late 90s.

Perkins diesels are a popular conversion for older Land Rovers.

Hi Albert,
Sounds like a little confusion. The Perkins Prima turbo diesel was used
in Rover Maestros in 1993-94 and became the basis for the Rover L-series
diesel for small cars (Rover's first direct injection diesel). Rover
developed several diesels of their own and used at least two "bought in"
diesels (VM and BMW). In the 1953 one could buy a Turner diesel
conversion in 2 litre or 3 liter displacement for Land Rovers. Some
discussions with Standard Triumph were held concerning the use of
Ferguson tractor engines in Land Rovers, but as nothing came of the
talks with Standard Triumph Rover began producing their own 2 litre
diesel in 1956 which they later enlarged to 2.25 litres. This engine was
also produced as a gasoline version and introduced in the Series 2 Land
Rovers. It also was used in the P4 80 saloon. Though a diesel P4 saloon
was produced experimentally, it never went into production. Rover also
designed and built the 200TDi and 300TDi diesels for use in Land Rovers.
The VM diesels from Italy were first used unsupercharged in the SD1
(2400D) and Range Rover and subsequently in the 800 series cars.
Rover developed a diesel version of the aluminum V8 (Project Iceberg),
but could not get it to hold together. Left over Iceberg crankshafts
became the basis for the 4.2 liter V8 used in long wheelbase Range
Rovers from 1993 til 1995.

That was fun and I learned some stuff while digging this up. I think the
only diesel Rovers we got in North America were 2.25 litre Land Rovers.

Roverly,
Kent K.

Robert,

I spoke with the seller. He has the car up on a Jaguar site, and I also
stumbled across it on Craigslist this morning, along with some Jaguars:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/cto/2904170821.html

He promised me photos, but I have not seen them yet. It sounds like a
solid project, but restoring an RM reiley, let alone a drophead, is not
like restoring an MGB, with excellent parts availability. My primary
concern would be the wooden body frame. I saw one that popped up on
Hemmings nearby and I would have had to hire a full-time carpenter to
make it right.

Having said that, they are gorgeous cars that are extremely rare.
Unfortunately, the rarity makes it hard to value, and most sellers think
that the car is worth oodles of money, normally based on a few online
listings in Europe. If I were anywhere near that car I would be taking a
look, I can promise you that.

Very nice! I'm keeping an eye out for them, but haven't seen (or heard of)
a LHD P5B over here until now.

Perhaps there are a few more to be found?

Hello Dirk and everyone on Rovernet,
Great to hear about our annual event! I am looking forward to it as
Ialways do!
I have been working hard getting my father's '56 Porsche Speedster all
reassembled and running again. I am very excited to be progressing with
this restoration, as this car got me into cars in the first place! Let me
explain... Sorry, it is not a Rover!
I used to play in our Porsche while I was waiting for the school bus.
The Speedster was stored in a small shed, near the road, at the end of our
driveway, for many years before we began to restore it.
I am reassembling the car, at last, after a very long drawn out body
shell restoration. We received the painted shell of the car back from the
body shop last November. It was stuck in this body shop for 12 years until
I went there and finished the metalwork myself!!
My father bought this car in Boulder, Colorado in 1965 while he was in
graduate school there. My parents were already married, while they were in
college. My mother rode to the hospital to have me in this car in Boulder
on March 21, 1967. After finishing school, the 3 of us drove in the
Porsche back to Massachusetts, and then Maine, where it was parked for a
long time, starting in 1970!
I got our car running for the first time, that I ever remember, on my
birthday, just a few days ago, 45 years after my parents brought me back
from the hospital in it!!
Please pardon the non Rover oriented material, but if it were not for
this car, I may not be interested in Rovers, or I may not be here at all!!
My best to you all!

Too Cool!..neat story, I think we all understand, that many of us have
interest in other cars as well!..with ownership into other ones too.
Cars of our days gone by, can be addictive, as MANY of you
know....impoertantly though is just to have simply fun with these and
not to get all wrapped up in the reverence of enity..lol
I bet WE ALL have some good to Great stories to tell....i.e I have a
'86 XJ6 Jaguar that I purchased from GOODWILL back in 2000. was
donated by a physican who was the second owner at 50k miles...
I find a good story/ true good story very interesting...and I bet a
lot of others do too.

Hello Rovernetters,
WOW! a Jaguar XJ6 from Goodwill! That is quite a turn of events!!
   On the subject of XJ6s...
Many of you know that I own a restoration shop. I do work on Rover cars,
Land Rovers, Jaguars, Volvos and I do other projects that come my way. I
have not been too busy lately and had been thinking about getting a
supplementary job. I received a call from a vendor and shop that I buy
parts from recently. I landed 2 very large jobs on referal!! The more
noteworthy one is that I will be installing a modern Corvette engine in a
'70s XJ6 2 door sedan and sending the car to its owner in Saudi Arabia!! I
have been doing some reading and yes, the parts exist to do it...should be
educational!! The moral of the story is be patient, you never know what
will drop out of the sky and land at your feet!!
Best to everyone!

Congratulations also from me!
It is a beautiful history and I understand you very well.
Yesterday I was in Udine with a friend of mine , who is a 356 owner.
He told me that for Easter the car will leave the garage, and we are going to make an eastern pic - nic!
Best regards, hear you soon, GR.

Hello Tom,
That indeed is where the referal came from. I got to know John's Cars as
I installed a more modern transmission in a '66 Jaguar 3.8 SType, pictured
in my website, last summer. The SType and other Jags of the period use the
same transmission as the Rover 3 litre does. The GM transmission shifts
more smoothly, is easier to rebuild and seal against leaking.

Not totally certain, but 14 psi comes to mind. I know the 4cyl cars are 7 psi.

Hello Bill,
A higher pressure one works better because these cars do not have an
overflow tank for the cooling system. I run one that is 8 pounds on mine.
Did you drop in on the crossmember that supports the radiator? This is
often a dark oily spot! Good luck, Garrett

Hi Bill,

The owner's manual for the 3500S calls for 15 psi. My car is sporting
an "Atlas" cap of that pressure rating.

Cheers,

I have the Radiator cap listed as 15lbs. Part number RC315, Beck Arnley part number 133-8052, alternate part number FR56, GRC110, GRC181, 459-695.

If those numbers do not help then st george LTD of Texas list them, and the also provide a list of cars which use the same cap:

Scroll down a bit to Rover 3500S.

James.

Hi Everyone,
Haven't been on here for some time as I got out of the Rover scene for a while. Now looking to obtain a mint 3500S. It has to be in original colour and be one of the best around. Anyone who can help or give me a lead would be much appreciated

Thats very kind Dennis. I seem to remember that not many NADA owners actually took the time out to read properly and understand what I was looking for last time. I.E. A original, unmolested low mileage car as was the request. Instead was offered everything but. Sorry if you feel hard done by Dennis, I feel your agressive stance to be unjustified as you clearly did not understand the requirements previously. Aside from yourself I have had the pleasure to deal with certain individuals from Rovernet and have found it a useful forum. Maybe my idea of 'mint' or 'unmolested' is different to yours. Being in the motor industry professionally (ex Bentley master Technican) I have high expectations.
I hope someone can restore my faith from the other side of the water. And Dennis, please refrain from making silly comments and pay miore attention to what was written in the first place, would save us all from the monotony.
Thanks

To be frank Richard, what was written before sounds much like the typical post of a poser, sounding big and important while setting conditions on the request such that it can never be satisfied. I have no idea who you are, but I do know Dennis from the Rovernet over the years and I am much more likely to believe him than you.

Yours

Sorry if you feel hard done by Dennis, I feel your agressive stance to be unjustified as you clearly did not understand the requirements previously. Aside from yourself I have had the pleasure to deal with certain individuals from Rovernet and have found it a useful forum. Maybe my idea of 'mint' or 'unmolested' is different to yours. Being in the motor industry professionally (ex Bentley master Technican) I have high expectations.

I was fully aware of what you asked for ..at the time I was considering selling my car but I changed my mind on the advice of others . I am sure someone on your side of the pond would be able to confirm that you are a fine gentleman who has great intentions ...otherwise I would suggest the term "Seller Beware" may apply .. You my friend have a history on this side of the pond... Thanks ..

You just just proved my point. If you knew what I wanted why did you offer me something else??
If anyone is in doubt why don't you post your pictures of the car and my requirements next to it?
As for having a 'history', yes I do, safely purchased 2 cars last year from California, unfortunately the third fell through as I had a change in circumstances.
It's so easy to rubbish someones good name especially at a distance, personally I wouldn't do that to someone else even if I had nothing else to do.
Matter closed I hope

I am sure someone on your side of the pond would be able to confirm that you are a fine gentleman who has great intentions ...otherwise I would suggest the term "Seller Beware" may apply .. You my friend have a history on this side of the pond... Thanks ..

It appears that we are entering into playground politics. Vern, you don't know me and are in no position to comment. Secondly, I don't like this 'us' and 'them' attitude. So being gracious I will delete my membership and stick with the UK forum as I am blown away by the attitudes I alone have encountered. Simply not going to lower myself to a level new to me. I wish you all goodluck but I want no part of this, would be easy for me to judge people I don't know but thankfully I have morals that stop me from doing it.

I got P4 1951Cyclopes?
P4 1953
p4 1964

P5 1961
p5 1965
P6 1967 TC

Outside of my two (I brought another one in as a project car at the
same time) I have never seen a P5B in the US but I have been told
there is a handful.

The one shown is interesting as it has a new 4.7 liter Rover engine in
it and LPG (Propane) conversion on it. It can be switched from LPG to
gasoline with a button on the dash.

I have a customer who says he has MWS Dunlop wire wheels for his Rover P6B,
but wants to buy adapters. Does anyone have anything to sell? I have never
seen a set, so am not familiar with what is involved. Are the wire wheels
the same as Triumph stag or MGB, or are they unique? Thank you, James Dean.

Hi James

As far as I know the splines are standard Rudge pattern. I have no idea if the Dunlop wires follow that pattern. New hubs are required front and rear, the fronts are a straight swap but the rears require a different washer, nut & a circlip to attach the hub to the halfshaft (now I know what the groove in the end of the halfshaft is for). I've also only seen a 4cyl car with wires, so a P6B may have other issues.

Yours
Vern

Hi Richard,
There are four other Coupes I can name. Dirk Burrowes has one that is
restored (came from Vancouver, BC) and another that could be restored
(came from California). There is a nice one in New York City (or was
until a few years ago) that I have not heard from lately. I have one
that is in process. All are RHD. Yours is the only LHD I know of and it
is indeed beautiful. Dirk also has at least one P5B saloon.

Roverly,
Kent Kinard
San Antonio, TX

Wires were never an offering for a P6B, only an option on some P6
models. P6 wires can be retrofitted to a P6B, though the rims will be
narrower than the 5.5" standard on the V8 models at 14x5.

Dunlop wires and hubs are still made in small quantities and thay can
supply hubs for a P6 - hubs for MGs and so on are different

http://www.mwsint.com/FitmentGuide/FindEntry.asp

The use of bolt on adapters in place of proper fiitings can put the
track out an inch or more which creates a problem with clearance on
the rear wings.

Hi
It has always been my understanding that wire wheels are not used or recommended on the P6B, can be dangerous because of the greater torque from the V8 engine on the rears. I believe this as I have seen the damage caused to the plate that holds the diff in place also caused by torque.
                       Cheers Ben 9irishrover)

New hubs are required front and rear, the fronts are a straight swap but the rears require a different washer, nut & a circlip to attach the hub to the halfshaft (now I know what the groove in the end of the halfshaft is for). I've also only seen a 4cyl car with wires, so a P6B may have other issues.

Hi

The wheels are unique to Rover P6's as the wheels have the larger 52mm Jaguar hubs. I've seen the splined hubs listed on MWS website.

Good luck

It does not look bad.
Interiors look good.

Oggetto: [Rovernet ] 3500S Nada Rad cap

I have the Radiator cap listed as 15lbs. Part number RC315, Beck Arnley part number 133-8052, alternate part number FR56, GRC110, GRC181, 459-695.

If those numbers do not help then st george LTD of Texas list them, and the also provide a list of cars which use the same cap:

 http://www.saintgeorgeltd.com/Part-Listings/Coolng%20System/RADIATOR%20CAPS.html

Scroll down a bit to Rover 3500S.

James.

It will cost a fortune to bring back to life.

There are still so much good p4's around...

I had one, looking a lot better then this one which revealed so much horrors when I started stripping it that it left the garage in boxes of spares

Luckily I was able to drive it for some months before starting the "renovation" project. So I had fun with it, but 25 liters of petrol and a liter of oil every 100 km was proving hard on my student-budget :-)

hi Gentlemen

I have serveral sets of Rover P6 wire wheels , they are not unique to the rover P6 ---they were actually "borrowed " from an Alvis ---sadly I don't know which Alvis --probably a TD21..

I have several sets of rear splines (NOS) and some front splines ---all front ones are used , and what I would describe as "past the sell by date"----I can get new splines for about ?250 each

One of the sets of 5 wheels is fully refurbished and fitted with new Barum 165x14 tyres .

I can be reached on 0044 1367 244646

or , of course , through rovernet

Talk soon
