Hello to all in the world of Rovernet,
We had a very entertaining, if soggy, RoveAmerica '12 event at Vy-Tek in
Fitchburg, Mass. this last weekend. Many attended and alot of interesting
discussions ensued. Photos were shared, a slideshow of past event photos
was shown by Dirk Burrowes and Steve Manwell.
I decided to take a poll. There is an election coming up, and all. The
poll was questioning all the individuals, or couples, attending our
weekend, about how many Rovers sedans, excluding Land Rovers, that they
have owned in their lifetime. Sometimes the numbers were quite sizable!!
They need not have been running.
All that were asked could account for ..... drumroll
(((((iO/)))))...........254 Rover sedans of all ages!
Enjoy your Rovers,
Garrett Bourque

Just returned from a trip through New York and New England to
RoveAmerica 2012, the fabulous annual gathering of Rover owners and
enthusiasts from all over the world. As usual, it was a most enjoyable
event, and this year, as a special treat, the weather was flown in from
the UK. Never mind, we had a a chance to visit Dirk Burrowes' secret
hoard of pre-war Rovers, and Cherie got to ride in the 1910 and 1929
cars. Saturday's barbecue dinner was great, as always, and Sunday's
visit to the historic mills of Lowell, Mass. was fascinating.

Thanks to Dirk, Steve, and Kurt for organising and hosting this
memorable event, and thanks also to Doreen Young, who took dozens of
pictures and a neat video of the Rovers departing from Mill No. 3 after
lunch on Saturday. This is on YouTube (see you have the sound on, you
must hear the 1910 Rover!)

Cheers,

  -- Bill and Cherie Daddis

(No doubt Steve and Doreen will post links to the photos.)

Hi Bill and Cheryl,

Glad you had a good trip back -- great to see you both. So far I have
posted some photos on Picasa at the links below, and links to some of
Doreen's photos and video are on the RA website here:

I imagine more photos or links may find their way on to the RA site too.

Hi All,
The world keeps getting smaller and it's nice to know there are still some really decent people on the planet (besides all of us Rovernutters).
Out of the blue I received a call from a man name Robert (1-951-204-7987). He is currently on vacation in Hawaii and gave me permission to list his number to all of you. An avowed gearhead with a penchant for pre-1970s Datsuns, he was in a junk yard, "Ecology All Import Yard" in Fontana, California and noticed a car which he did not recognize. It turns out to be a complete 3500S P6B. He couldn't understand what it was doing in a junk yard. He indicated it looks like it had been sitting, unused in a garage for years and then someone, not knowing what they had (maybe part of a deceased person's estate) had it taken away.
As he has described it, all the parts are intact, including front badging, bonnet badging and a complete interior which he states he could not see any noticeable tears. The full drive train is intact and he noticed only minor rust on a small section of the roof. Of course the people at the junk yard were of absolutely no help and could supply no information (i.e, does it run, etc.).
Nonetheless, this sounds like a real beauty which needs to be rescued quickly, rather than a carcass with some odds and ends which is too far gone to be given some TLC. He told me he found me on the internet, hoping to find someone who was associated with Rovers because he couldn't imagine this car being scrapped.
Please give this guy a call and save this car

Well, my P5 is once again a runner (for now, at least). I have fitted the repaired head, and that seems fine for the time being.

However, I removed the exhaust manifold to replace the gaskets, and I now cannot get the manifold to seal to the exhaust pipe.

Any suggestions? I have been considering unbolting the exhaust from the hangers and getting the seal right before reattaching everything to the underside of the car. Hopefully someone has a better suggestion.

Tom,

Great to hear that you got the 3 litre running. The exhaust manifold
outlet has a concave surface that the convex flange is supposed to seal
against. It's possible that a ridge of rust might need to filed smooth,
so that the two will seat better. Each of the exhaust joints in the
system meant to act like a ball and socket to some extent. Maybe some
exhaust joint sealer would help too.

Enjoyed meeting you at RoveAmerica and talking about all sorts of cars
including Rovers.

Steve,

Thanks for the description. My problem is that the two parts come together at such an angle that the flange cannot properly seal.

Bill,

Are you looking specifically for Wingard mirrors, or for the type that
came originally on the '68 to '71 Federal cars? The original type has a
base with a dimension of 111 mm center-to-center between the mounting
holes. The Wingards, which Rover seems to have started offering after
1971, have a shorter base and shorter distance between the holes.

I hope we can collectively get a project going to make a batch of new
mirrors with the 111 mm base, considering that nearly every Federal 2000
or 3500S needs one or two. Wingards are a similar looking substitute,
but they won't cover both threaded holes in the door, and the Wingards
are getting scarce too.

My 3500S and another 3500S sold in Canada appeared to have been fitted
with "Roberk" type mirrors. These mount with one screw to a mounting
plate that mounts to the door with two screws, and as these fit into
long slots on the mounting plate, the inter-hole distance is not all
that critical. I found a source for modern equivalents of these mirrors
here:

http://www.retroclassiccarparts.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=1149&Itemid=155&vmcchk=1&Itemid=155

I bought a pair and while they're not as robust as the originals, they
look quite nice.

These people also offer various other types of mirror...

Hope this helps a bit!

Cheers,

Tom--

Almost right; the earlier 5-main 2.6 engine was used in 90's and 105's up
through 1959. After that all 2.6 and 3.0 engines were based the 7-main
block:

100's, 95's, MkI 3-litres and European 6-cylinder Land Rovers had the
pre-Weslake head. The Weslake head will fit on these engines (but see oil
port comment below), but the steering box is in the way on RHD Land Rovers.

110's, MkII/III 3 litres and 1967 NADA Land Rovers had the Weslake head.

There are some other variations: an additional oil port and O-ring was
added at a rear corner of the head and block around 1965, and the rear main
bearing and seal changed at some point (different diameter?). MkII 3-litres
had one crankshaft for automatic and another for manual gearbox, then the
manual type became standard for both MkIII gearboxes.

confirm/refute this) that any 2.6 with the Weslake head is the 7-main engine
derived from the 3.0 and any with the non-Weslake head is the earlier 5-main
engine. This makes some sense, as the bore spacing changed to accommodate
the bearings, so the heads wouldn't be interchangeable (except, of course,
the earlier non-Weslake 3.0 head...). Perhaps all 5-main have non-Weslake
heads and only some 7-main have Weslake?

seems to contain some errors about this, including an implication that the

understanding that it used the earlier 5-main bearing engine).

Hello Rovernet,
I have not totally researched this, but DAP Rover parts in Springfield
Vermont may have them. They specialize in selling parts for all ages of
Land Rovers. I often buy Series 2 and 3 aged parts from them.
Also, I have several new old stock 3 litre head gasket sets. Does anyone
know if a 3.0 and a 2.6 are similar? They both have one carb.
Rover onward!!!

Hello Steve,
I had an unexpected opportunity to buy 3 Magstar wheels for a Rover 2000
last week. I do not have a direct need for them myself, I but know that
they are unusual. Can you think of anybody in the club that needs one to
complete a set, a pair, or all 3. My price is $150 each, or a possible
discount for all 3. They have fair condition Toyo tires on them and no
center caps. Wheels are in good condition cosmeticly. I can box and ship
them, with or without tires.
I had a great time at the Rover weekend! It was great to see everybody,
including your father and your wife.
My contact info is as follows....

Thanks for any referals you can give!

Message-ID: <BAY153-W35EEB8D531778102FC763FDEE40@phx.gbl>

Hi i've got another 3500S now ( converted to a 5 speed manual with a Holley Carb ) and its an electrical nightmare and i'm a bit of an electrical buffoon .......it has the original switches removed.....10 cent hong kong switches added doing nothing.......ARGHHHH.......anyway have isolated a few....now figured out the air con high pressure switch, hooked it up and got it to click.....Don't know what it does though other than click...LOL but realize the car has to be running and the fan on for air to work although i figure it doesn't have any refridgerant after all these years..... oh and the fan only works on high or 3.......maybe one of the switches works the fan on medium or low or is there a low(if the main switch wasn't working on 1 or 2).... .........two of the switches are for the 2 aircraft fuel pumps in the trunk( a main and reserve?).....got the reserve pump working now.......i have one switch going nowhere that has power.......one i can't figure out where it goes(brown/black and brown/purple wires) which my or may not be original....it has power but can't figure out what it is doing...............finally i can't figure out what is supposed to control the window master.....colour wires or where they go or come from....do they go to the main 4 way switch also or go somewhere else.......my other 3500S is up in storage so i can't look at it..............i' really don't need it but would like to do something with these 6 switches he has bastardized the panel with left of the steering wheel.......As far as i can tell originally i would only have the window master and air con one....of course i need one for each of these fuel pumps.....so i will have 2 extra placebo style switches. Any help would be appreciatedBill Robertson
