Subject: [Rovernet ] Rover V8 Distributor and /or parts
Message-ID: <003801cbc2de$9bcea310$d36be930$@net.au>

Hi to All,

I am having the Piranha electronic ignition system in my P6B replaced by a
Pertronix Ignitor. The Piranha is breaking down and causes the engine to
cut out suddenly. I cannot drive the car at the moment as one never knows
when the engine will stop.

Julian, from Discovery Land Rover, looked at my distributor and said that
it was missing a few parts that the new Pertronix would require.

I don't have a spare distributor to rob unfortunately.

Can anyone help please? I am having the unit swapped over next week. I would
be happy to replace the distributor that you lend me, yours would simply
tide me over to allow this necessary job to proceed.

Sorry about sending this worldwide, but there are some Rovernet members here
in Perth Western Australia, as well as across Australia to whom I am
appealing.

Many thanks

Peter Mitchell

Just a reminder...P4 ('55 and later) is the same as Classic Mini pickup
(I don't know about van and station wagon).

I have an odd request, probably relating mostly to other British marques,
than Rover... Does anyone have interesting photos of a 1950's-1960's garage
scene suitable to be copied for a mural? I am putting together ideas for a
wall size mural, ideally that could be painted as looking through a door or
window ;of a garage or race preparation area in the 1950's to 1960's? The
city of Sebring Florida is celebrating their 100th anniversary, and I am
trying to present some ideas to illustrate their rich heritage, in that
era.. There are some well intentioned people in Sebring, who are good at PR,
but without some helpful advice, would probably choose the Chrysler Sebring
as the car of the year, because they don't know any better. Please contact
me directly at jaguru at bellsouth.net. Thank you, James Dean, Ft.
Lauderdale....................................................

The rear seatbelts in my 1969 Rover TC 2000 are badly frayed.

Does anyone have another set? Color is grey and the buckle is chrome, made by Iwrin Parachute Co.

Thanks!

Albert

Albert,
For what it's worth I could not find any original replacements for my seat belts, but I took them to an auto upholsterer after carefully removing the labels. They did a great job of making me a new set complete with the original labels sewn back on (I cheated because my interior is black and the 'grey' of my originals was a putrid, washed out, greenish grey----but they could probably match the material color for you).

You could install some good aftermarket belts. I looked into replacement belts a few years ago, and worked out that the Iwrin chute company no longer makes seat belts. Have a look at the following link. They make belts which are a pretty good match.

Albert,

I have a very nice pair of grey belts manufactured by Irving Air Chute of
Great Britain for Rover/Land Rover. They were given to me so I do not know
if they are what you need.

To describe, they have three points which appear to be made to slip over
posts so they can be easily removed from the car rather than the more modern
style of bolting the belt to the car. There is a parachute logo on the
buckles and a nylon padding stitched to the shoulder portion. Let me know
if these are what you need.

Regards,

Glen

Hello,I live in Moncton New Brunswick Canada and am starting (finally!) a restroration on a rover 1959 rover 90 I bought and stored over 30 years ago. I am looking for some interior door panel two piece retaining clips, used or new. A picture is posted at the web address below, but I bet the same clips used to fasten the door panels has been in use for a long time. Thanks pete

Thanks for the reply. Yes,I do know they have the backing plate. The prices are steep for the plates plus to ship to Canada and I was hoping to find another solution. Thanks pete

Message-ID: <307731.92167.qm@web83716.mail.sp1.yahoo.com>

I have not been able to find numbers for rear shocks without shipping from the U.K. so I did some research on my own. I went to a Monroe site which has all of their dimensions and type of mounting. I removed one of mine and took measurements found Monroe 33124 and KYB 343149 fits fine. I am sure these can be crossed over to other brands also. The other nice thing is that they were in stock at my local parts house, no shipping cost. The KYBs that I bought were $31.00 each and Munroes even less. They also fit mid 90s Toyota Corollas. Hope this will be of help to others.

<the key to that type of shock is the "rebound" design...for example, P5 and P6
shocks have significantly less compression and marginally
stronger than average rebound specs...did a similar "crossover" exercise with
similar dimensions and type of mounting only to find a very
stiff and uncomfortable ride...that is why original shocks are so expensive as
they were designed with the specific Rover-style suspension
in mind...best of luck on the P4 though...keep us informed

stock at my local parts house, no shipping cost. The KYBs that I bought were
$31.00 each and Munroes even less. They also fit mid 90s Toyota Corollas. Hope
this will be of help to others.

Fellas

I just happen to have a 1969 Monroe master shock catalogue. At that time,
the P4 called for a Monroe # 4018 shock in the front and a #1020 shock in
the rear.

These numbers are now obsolete BUT the catalogue went on to say what other
cars of the era used the same shocks.

Here you are guys :

The 1020 was also used on : 61-68 Toyota Corona(rear),, 58-69 Rambler
American(rear), and the 56-61 Jag Mark 8 & 9s......

The 4018 was also used by : 59-60 Mercury all except Comet(rear), 57-60
Ford F-100 truck(front)

Better add this info to the archives. Does anyone else need shock info?
This catalogue shows quite a few other now dead foreign vehicles.

The rebound and compression did occur to me however the newones had to be be better than the 52yr. old that the car had. I put front Munroes on a while back and to be honest they seem a little soft but never having driven a P4 before I have nothing to compare it to. My other car is a Morgan so what do I know about suspension enginering.

Very interesting, but really I don't know.
I prefer mechanical watches, self- winding or not...

The first thing I'd do is check this out on the website Snopes----they're very good at differentiating hoaxes. Ultimately, I suspect this is a farce because if it is an internal combustion engine then there has to be exhaust. I don't fancy having a watch with an exhaust pipe sticking out the side!!!!! Applications such as a pacemaker seems similarly absurd---where are you going to vent the exhaust? (Yes, this leads to all sorts of openings for witty Rovernutters, including the idea of tapping into one's GI system and increasing the amount of gas escaping from one's posterior-----I won't digress any further!).

I put front Munroes on a while back and to be honest they seem a little soft but never having driven a P4 before I have nothing to compare it to. My other car is a Morgan so what do I know about suspension enginering.

?Lance, The shocks you want for a 3500S are manufactured by "GAZ"... they are fully adjustable w/bushings

????????????cat # GT84611 and GT84612 They were 230 BP + shipping. That was the my cost back in April '10.

??????????? Go to.... gazshocks.com....... Very helpful and can AND will contact you by phone or email.

??????????? These are more expensive than stock "Woodhouse" versions; but infinitely better.....Ed Krupa

My other car is a Morgan so what do I know about suspension enginering.

Sorry Lance, this catalogue only lists the P4 Rovers and a bunch of early
Landrovers. Has lots of other imported cars of the era, however.

Sorry, nothing later than the P4 and a bunch of early Landrovers. I have a
SD1 also and did some serious research but found nothing sold in the US
that matches even close. I ended up with Rimmer.

Welcome to the "club", Ben. I am now 3 1/2 months post surgery and feel almost back to normal. Still a little sternum pain. It takes quite a while to heal properly, I guess. It is frustrating to be limited from heavy lifting, but glad that I had the surgery for the results. I did ask for a 26 year warranty. Recover well, don't rush it.

Ben....,
WOW! You didn't really have to compete with me but you are up on me by ONE.

I recognize all you wrote although I am more fortunate with lack of pain. I am
secured with Titanium wire - hate to think of airport security in June, July,
and November :-(
I was in hospital most of the time from surgery on Dec. 23 (Christmas present?)
to last Friday due to a variety of reasons. I found learning how to walk again a
challenge - not there yet. Walking faster now. Balance improving. Cautious on
steps.

(I was just thinking - I think I can trump you with chemo treatments for a low
level reoccurance of lymphoma. The first treatment was outstanding and kicked
out two visible lumps completely. The doctor is impressed with how well I am
responding and expects less treatments than he first thought. He gave me
clearance to fly east in June. Now, I just have to sweet-talk my cardiologist.

Sorry all - now back to Rover talk :-)

Welcome to the "club", Ben. I am now 3 1/2 months post surgery and feel almost
back to normal. Still a little sternum pain. It takes quite a while to heal
properly, I guess. It is frustrating to be limited from heavy lifting, but glad
that I had the surgery for the results. I did ask for a 26 year warranty.
Recover well, don't rush it.

Seems this heart surgery thing is catching!!! Just got home from a
month in the QE11 Hospital in Halifax with quadruple bypass surgery. On the mend

Well I'm enjoying driving my rover after its engine rebuild [2700 mls so
far] Before the rebuild the A/C system had not need any refrigerant added,
in the several years I have owed the car. I had discharged and removed it
during the rebuild. Today when I was getting ready to recharge the system,
I found a leak around the top of the receiver/dryer. Any ideas on repair
or replacement? Thanks Nick

Hi Nick,
This is a GM/Frigidaire system known as VIR (valve in receiver). The parts are
readily available but recharging the system with R12 could be very expensive. I
have never had one of these systems converted to R134a and do not know if it is
even possible. Just out of curiosity, what were you charging it with?

Roverly,
Kent K.

I did a R134a retrofit on my '78 SD1, but these originally had the Australian spec aftermarket Alpinair R12 systems fitted by the importer (then Jaguar Rover Australia) and were different to the later factory versions (although I believe they used the same compressor).

I swapped in a Sanden SD7H13 R134a compressor, new 134a hoses and O ring type connectors, larger parallel flow condenser, new TX valve, new 134a drier/receiver and pressure switch. Used existing evaporator but got it flushed out and pressure tested. The early Australian spec SD1s had the Alpinair under dash unit fitted with ducting into the heater outlet dash vents with the a/c controls (they came with 3 speed fan and adjustable thermo switches) beside the central vents above the console. On the Aussie versions the vents were raised out slightly from the face of the dash in a special padded panel.

I bought everything online from Jeremy at www.speedyairspares.com.au

It works extremely well.

Cheers
Rob

Nick

It is a GM receiver/drier very common to other GM cars of the same era as
the Rover. Any A/C shop will recognize the thing immediately not even caring
that it came from a Rover. It sounds like a complete replacement is in
order. I dont think you can repair the can.

Thanks for the comments. It is the GM system it has the GM rotary
compressor. I looked around on ebay and did not see anything I thought
would work. I'm going to a local parts house today and see what I can
find.For a refrigerant I used an R12 substitute from
               http://www.es-refrigerants.com/default.asp
I've used it in R12 systems before and it works well. thanks Nick

I've come across an interesting piece today, that I have to share with
those of you that might be interested..I'd hate to see this item go
away, if one of us needs to have it.
This young kid' in town, has got a 1974 XJ-12 ..350 chev &
transmission conversion, that had apparantly been in his family for a
few years. It doesn't seem.to be rusted out, it doesn't seem to have
been monkeyed with except for the conversion. He has been running it
all around the area, so it must be basically sound.
Now beyond that it needs all kind of help..but the body looks
straight, original chrome wheels look good..sooo, one would actually
have a pretty good start, to make it into something sound.

Looks like it could be had, I'd say for probably $1500 if you flashed
the cash. I'm not an interested party in this, just hate to see it
bashed, then crushed. If I remember those conversions were about five
grand when said and done.

It's a pretty classy blast from the past..if that's what you like, and
where you want to pour some money into.

Hi Nick,

please tell us more about the R12 refrigerant substitute. I have a
1994 Range Rover that needs recharging/leak checking?
I'm not sure which product from Envirosafe to use. I guess I need to
check for leaks, and perhaps top up the compressor oil?

Thanks

You should grab it!! Years ago I wanted a Jag, I went to look at many
examples, including one owner vehicles. Each time I went they took great
delight showing me the pages and pages of receipts that they had spent that
year, truly daunting, I remember remarking it must have been a bad year,
they all pulled out almost the same number or receipts for the year before,
and the year before that etc, one guy had even bound his. This really turned
me off, I saw one of the first for sale that had been fitted with a Chev 350
and Turbo 400 transmission, just for fun I went to see it. I asked him the
same question, how much did it cost for maintenance? He looked at me with a
funny expression and said " Points, plugs and gas!" I bought it on the
spot!!!! It was much more powerful, 100% reliable, 100% more fuel efficient
an a lot of fun till it was stolen and wrapped around a tree. Still would
like another one!! Maybe an XJS with a 350HP 350!!

Hi Gents Just had a phone call from a woman with an Indian accent
purporting to be from micro soft.

She informed me that I had a problem with windows that I reported 3
weeks ago (?) and she had been instructed to give me a call to help me
fix it. After repeatedly asking me to hit the windows start button and r
then tell her what was in the run box. (I had already started to shut
down the laptop by this time) I told her it was empty and what could I
do? (By this time I had turned it off and shut the lid)After asking me
to do it 3 or more times I told her that the screen had gone blank and
what had gone wrong could she help me to fix it? (By this time I'm
watching the news). She told me to hang on, as she needed to speak with
someone. After holding the line open for a few minutes or so I hung up
to receive a call back soon after. Once she phoned I went through it all
again, by this time the laptop had gone cold as it was under the table,
and told her that the screen had gone blank again. She then told me to
turn the computer of and start again which after a moment's pause I said
I had done, we then went through the same process again for a few
minutes more only this time when I said the screen had gone blank she
hung up..

I wonder how much a 10-minute call from India to Australia just cost
them...

BTW if you do get a call from someone tele- marketing dont hang up as it
gets logged and they keep calling again and again. I tell them I will
get the person and put them on hold. This then gets logged on their
computers and as above cost them money, after a few times they dont call
back...

Den.

I haven't taken any photos..it is simply pretty much as I described.
It apparantly was some sort of dark blue green teal type color at one
time..the body is really pretty good, the paint is shot, the original
interior is shot. The radio had be replaced with a remote type
radio/cd player, that works. The wheels, chrome w/ bulbous chrome jag
caps, not too bad/serviceable. A luggage rack/a bit shot. No sunroof.
The spare tyre identical to the running ones, with no apparant visible
rust in the trunk.
But what impressed me the most, is in taking a fast look, nothing
seemed to be monkeyed with on the exterior, even the xj 12 emblems are
in place. Front and rear windows didn't seem to be clouded either..but
again, I just hasitly took a fast look.
I remember growing up, how I was introduced to a 1959 Big
Austin-Healey 106. It had been professionally built. Chev 350 w/muncie
shortened 4-speed, shortened '57 chev rear end. Discs all the way
around. 90 chrome spoke wheels. Adapted '63 AH roll-up window doors.
Some kinda mill under the hood, and the hood had not been altered
Black, with black covertible top, red rolled and pletted interior. The
headers of course were beautifully customed..and the only difference
you could tell about this SLEEPER, was it's four very small diameter
exhaust /tail pipes exiting, straight out the back...
Gentlemen...it was back in the days of Cruising..I actually saw the
car jump straight up off the pavement..and disappear!..that was
impressive at my young age..and I never have been right since!!
I followed the car for years, amazingly, as I know it, it has had only
two owners..one being the original guy who had done all this...and
then the present owner..of whom I have lost contact with..but as I
have been told, the car still exists.
I'm basically a purist, with a touch of let's fix it better, improve,
in the way the car manufacturer didn't...I still feel the
designer/engineer with some of these car companies, have no insight
into the practical real world....
I'm probably like most of you, whether you really want to admit it or
not..I have too many automobile projects already, opposed to the time
I've got left to live on this beautiful planet!..I already own an '86
XJ-6, stock, I might add, Haha. There's no real monetarial value in
these things that I see, just therapy from the real world (smile)!

Guess I took the liberty of being a real blowhard here..but i just
hate to see a vintage car go to waste..and I realize it happpens
everyday all around us..guess we just can't save th Whale either, huh
Rover Guys..but we're surviviors..LOL!

Dermot this is what I do and I'm not sure it should be taken as gospel. If
I'm looking for leaks I pressure the system with air and use soap and
water. This of course only works for areas you can see.
I've used http://tinyurl.com/6g8g24g .It comes with a table that
tells you how much to put in. You need to know how much R12 or 134
your system holds. This time around I've ordered Industrial 12a
Refrigerant . When it comes to oil if I've just fixed a leak and
don't have any signs of oil I don't add any. If I've added a
component I'll add a couple of oz of the correct oil. The
refrigerant manufacture will tell you what the correct oil is.
Lastly you need a set of gauges or have access to a set.All the
pressures you need are on the web site. Good luck Nick

please tell us more about the R12 refrigerant substitute. I have a
1994 Range Rover that needs recharging/leak checking?
I'm not sure which product from Envirosafe to use. I guess I need to
check for leaks, and perhaps top up the compressor oil?

Thanks

This has happened to a number of my friends and colleagues.

What they are trying to do is to get you to allow your PC to be
remotely controlled thru the Windows Remote Desktop facility that
comes with certain versions of Windows.

Warning! Take extra care when responding to unsolicited phone calls
purporting to represent Microsoft seeking your computer details and
instructing you to implement changes to your computers control panel.

While this seems to have come from an Urban Myth story, it is in fact
something that is happening here in Australia at present.

My friend received a phone call purporting to be from a Michael Smith
of "Windows Service Centre, Sydney phone 02 6100 3034".

The gist of the call was to say that his computer had been infiltrated
and had a malware problem. Sounded convincing, especially after my
friend read that in the Car Club forum one of the forum members had
developed a virus and / or a possible malware infiltration. The
caller spoke most convincingly about how each computer has its own
individual identification reference embedded in it, and that they,
(Microsoft) naturally were alerted to his problem

The caller wanted him to open the computer's "Control Panel" so he
could guide him through the necessary "corrective" steps to "clean"
the computer system. At this stage alarms went off in his mind, and he
ended the call.

My friend called Microsoft Help in Sydney [ph. 13 20 58] and they
confirmed that Microsoft DO NOT contact users in this manner. He said
that it should be reported to www.scamwatch.gov.au. Microsoft will
themselves be following up this matter as well.

So, for all you novices and even "experts" out there be extra careful!

Cheers,

Peter H

I've never been to New Zealand, th little Island east of Oz?..but of
course as most of us have seen it's video excerpts from time to
time..such a Beautiful Enitiy of it's own...
and I understand ..the people there are resilient and true.. so much
in life we don't understand..as why things do happen, and then- to th
good people, of value and substance.
May the perseverance of Burt Munroe be with you..but importantly..

..may God Bless You...:O)

There is a guy near me that puts a 350 Chevy with automatic in everything
even a 1949 Rover P3 75 that belonged to the British embassy. It makes me

It's a pretty classy blast from the past..if that's what you like, and
where you want to pour some money into.

they all pulled out almost the same number or receipts for the year before,
and the year before that etc, one guy had even bound his.

Oggetto: [Rovernet ] XJ 12, 350 chev and trasmission conversio - Okay, I'm a

Rover Guy x2,but for all of you that other British interests...

Too right. Some 20 years ago my brother and I put an American small block Chev V8 into an XJ6 Jag. Absolutely transformed the car in terms of power, fuel economy, reliability and servicing costs. We concluded that this was the engine that should have been in the car from Day One. Beautiful piece of kit and pleasure to have under the right foot.
The only thing that caused problems in the project was cooling. The V8 was shorter, so the cooling fan was located too far away from the radiator. After frigging about with trying to fabricate a fan tunnel we soon settled on an electric fan.
