O.,k., o.k., I know this isn't P.C. because it is not a Rover, but if this advert doesn't put a smile on your face then I imagine you're already 6 feet under. Enjoy! (The line about the brakes under "The Bad" is priceless").

Hi Lance
I think it was okay protocol on Rovernet to post an ad for a Studebaker, after all we have a real connection, didn't we have two Roverbakers back around 1948=49. Good ad too, very funny and original, not a bad looking car either!!
                            Cheers Ben (irishrover)

Hi Netters,
I believe there is a Rover connection to this car. I can't find the
reference in a list of BW35 applications, but I believe '63 and '64 six
cylinder Studes used the Borg Warner Type 35 similar to those used in
our beloved Rovers. Of course the DG transmission as used in Mk. I and
Mk. II P5's is a Studebaker design. Studebaker went over to the BW Type
12 transmission around January 1955 and the DG box appeared in the UK as
an option on late XK140 Jags.

Roverbakerly,
Kent K.

Studebaker used the DG box from it's first automatics thru 1955. Starting
with the 56 models, Studebaker began using a simpler and less expensive BW
automatic called the "Flightomatic" which Ford also adopted calling it the
"Cruiseomatic". Stude used this transmission until quitting the auto business
in 1966. The DG box was used by Jag at least until 1961 because a Mk IX I
once owned had it. The later Stude box, e.g. Flightomatic, was not however, a
BW35 but similar in design. A 1967 AMC V8 car I also once owned had the BW
model 12 in it.
Today my SD1 shares it's garage with a Studebaker.

Hi Glenn,
Studebaker made major revisions to both body and drivetrain in mid-model
year 1955, including engine and transmission changes. (wrap around
windshield/cowl, Type 12 automatic, dropping the 224 V8 except in the
trucks).

I have owned 37 different Studebakers including a '50 Land Cruiser with
the DG box. I know the difference between a DG, a Type 35 and a Type 12
(Flight-o-matic). I had Type 12 transmissions in two 62 Crusisers, two
GT Hawks and two Avantis. I will reiterate that I believe '63 and '64
six cylinder Stude automatics were Type 35 boxes. Earlier six automatics
were Type 12s as were later GM engined Studes (Cruiser, Daytona,
Commander and the early Avanti II which I did own). Type 35s were also
used in some six cylinder Ramblers of the period. I never owned a Type
35 in a Stude as all my Stude 6s were stick and OD, including the T-cab
trucks. The Type 12 (Flightomatic) looks nothing like the Type 35,
though the operating priciples are the same. Type 12 uses a cast iron
case. Rover never used the type 12, but Jaguar did, putting it behind
the early XKE v12 before switching to the GM Turbo 400. I don't know
when Jag switched from the DG to the Type 12 though. Your 1961 date is
probably right since the MK X Jag introduced for the 1962 model year
used the Type 12 transmission.

Good to hear that your Rover keeps good company.

Roverbakerly,
Kent K.

OK, I pulled the trigger to quick. Northwest Transmission does list BW35
for Studebakers '62-'66. The iron case Flightomatic was a BW Model 8
instead of a 12. They look very similar but the Model 8 case is shorter.
Ford used both 8 and 12. My bad. -KK

Hi Kent and Glenn,
Wow, what a coincidence! I'm a Studebaker collector for 40+ years, having acquired my first Studebaker (1955 Champion C3 Coupe) for $75.00 at the ripe old age of 14! Rovers have been a later interest, just within the last 7 years or so. In fact, I fell for a Rover 3500s when I was looking at a different car, and the owner asked me if I wanted to look at his "other car that he was trying to get rid off" in the back yard! I guess orphan makes (and those who collect them) like similar company!

I am still looking for a Weslake head for my 3-litre Rover P5. The head
from a 2.6L Land Rover should be identical (no?).

Please let me know if you have one. Shipping ought to be reasonable in
the US via Greyhound, perhaps even Canada?

Many thanks,

Tom

Yes, as long as it's not for the Dunlop barkes. Which is unlikely, very few TCs were built with Dunlops.

Since a lot of these parts are fasteners the following company might be able to help with some of these if you can supply a sample or work out what the "special screws" are.

Hello Kent> Hold off until the weather changes on syncro rings. It is so
cold up here that I cannot do any work in the shop until the temperature
rises a bit. At 85 long years old, my fingers can't even function in
measuring the diameters of the cone shape within the syncro!!! I did manage
to locate the very fine, German made, roller bearing thrust washers, and
managed to rebuild one full transmission of the 415.....variety. Now I am
at work on the earlier transmission requiring a missing reverse gear idler
on its separate shaft at the bottom of the box. I only have the locking bar
for the fork shifter, and will require from somewhere an idler gear
(straight cut gears) and its shaft. this little addition to the
transmission is locked on the outside with a flatbar sliding into a slot on
the end of the shaft. So it is shaft and ger that are missing. Have a
lazy search if you can for these 2 items and let me know. Cheers, Ian
P. S. Of course, I will send you your cost and shipping if and when you
let me know.  No rush.

Lately, the amps meter needle on my 1970 Rover 3500S goes into the minus area a lot while driving. When this happens the IGN light comes on and the radio and directional signals don't work.

Sometimes, the needle will return to the positive side of the meter and everything goes on again.

At other times, the needle will dance
wildly back and forth.

This has been happening for the past few days.

Do I need a new battery?

Thanks.
Albert

Hi Albert.. You have several places to check...it's in your charging system ...your altenator (I believe it does no longer have a generator) has a loose connection or bad wire somewhere...start at the altenator and confirm all conections. Regards Dennis Brooks

I don't normally do this, but I've only ever seen one of these, so thought I'd post it here. ?It is my auction. I hope no one takes offense. ?I am slowly sifting through piles of P6 parts.

Hello Lance, Rudiger, and everyone,
I also found the video to be an unfortunate practice. Is this 'banger
racing' of classic era cars continuing in the UK these days?

It has been many years since I attended a 'demolition derby' (banger
racing equivalent) here in the States. I remember at that time, the
entrants were seeking out the full sized Chevrolets, Buicks, Cadillacs,
and Mercurys as they were strongest platforms and held up best in the
numerous collisions. Presumably the Rovers and Humbers, etc are much the
same in the UK.

The sounds and smells of the engines and autoboxes burning themselves up
with ruptured cooling lines as the entrants tried to keep them moving
---well, it isn't too consistent with my interest in classic cars.

Dan

The ammeter is doing its job by letting you know that the charging circuit isn't. 1 gets you 5 that the alternator needs an overhaul - new sliprings etc. - a cheap and easy job for any sparky shop.
My policy is to have a replacement alternator on the shelf good to go whilst the other's in for surgery.

My understanding is that the UK banger brigade argue that the cars they use are rusted relics that have no chance of passing a mandated roadworthy inspection [MOT] for use on public roads. UK Practical Classics mag led a bit of a crusade some years ago against this activity in the wake of revelations that crims associated with banger racing were pinching good quality / restored heavy metal classics specifically to meet the demand for bangers. One of their editors apparently lost a mint Ford Granada Mk1 in this way and for this purpose.
With reference to the video clip: sad to see what looks like a Jaguar MkVII at 0:50 [these epitomized top of the range motoring in the mid-1950's] and it's gut wrenching to see a genuine rare bird in the form of a P6 station-wagon on the chopping block.
Here in NZ, the local speedway hosted a "demolition derby" as part of an evening's entertainment. After watching a straight-panel P4 getting its quietus, I vowed never to boycott this venue - a vow kept for 12 years and counting.

No worries Albert. I had an alternator wear out on me about a year ago and the symptoms were identical to those you describe. The local sparky did the job in under an hour for $20 cash beer money.

There is a regulator in the right side foot well that may be the problem.

Problem Solved:

On the internet, I found a shop promisingly named, "Alternators, Starters and Generators."

The guy looked at the alternator of my 1970 Rover 3500S, (which is conveniently located in plain sight at the front of the engine space) and noticed that the plastic housing for two wires that connect with the alternator appeared to be damaged.
He removed it and we could observe that one side of the housing had become eroded and one of the wires that is supposed to fit in there, was loose and going in and out.

He replaced the plastic housing, fitted the wires and voila: everything works again!

Thanks to all those who offered me their suggestions

Happy Holidays to All!

Albert

Hi Albert
I wouldn't bet my left testicle on it, but .......
Sounds like your alternator needs either:-
1. New brushes or
2. The old brushes are jamming in their guides or
3. The slip rings need cleaning and/or skimming.

Any one know if we have a new web master for the Rover car club of Canada? I haven't seen any new or any updates since the untimely death of our good friend Eric Russell.
Wishing Everyone a Very Merry Christmas & New Year.

Dirk Burrowes has been doing a temporary job, apparently there are some troubles getting admin access to the site, hence the lack of updates.

I know where that one is, it is in Portland Oregon, and is owned by a lady who trades on Ebay as "StephanieK" I believe. She is now a member of the RCCC. I bought some brake rotors from her last year. If you need further details to get in touch with her then email me off list. I know they have at least 4 Rover P6's at their business.
