Hi,
I am interested in finding out some information on the similarities between
the engine in my land rover and the rover p4 with the westlake head. Land
rover put a IOE 6 cylinder in 811 long wheelbase trucks between 1966 and
1968. Land rover suppliers have pretty much quit supporting them entirely
and I need some parts.

Does anyone on this list live in california near the bay area? I would like
to see an engine to compare visually if possible.

I know that I have the westlake head. I need to find valve cover gaskets,
inlet valves, valve guides and such.

thanks,
Linus

hi,
Does anyone on this list own a p4 110 and live in the bay area?

I have a land rover with an IOE 6 cylinder. The rover part supplies have all
but stopped carrying parts for this engine as it was only put into 811
trucks between 66 and 68.

I suspect that its the same engine as the p4 110 with the suffix b westlake
head on it. I am hoping to see one in person to compare my engine to.

I need parts for the westlake head and dont know where to get them

Hello all,

Some of us are living in the past with respect to value. P5s and of coarse
the Coupe have been rising steadily in value overseas. I know as I have kept
a careful eye on things. A outstanding example can run as much as #12,000
(that's UK pounds)

LHD examples in Europe can be more but I have never seen one for less then
#6000. I would admit that they do not carry the same value an Austin Healey
3000.

So a P5B coupe for $1500 is a steal! And yes, it is the journey
(restoration) not the destination that makes classic car ownership worth it.

Hi Netters,
I just remembered something else about this car. It may have had it's
VIN altered in order to get it into the US. Only P5B's manufactured
prior to January 1, 1968, were old enough to avoid certain import
restrictions before the twenty-five year rule went into effect. When I
talked with the current owner, he originally insisted that it was a
1964, which, of course, it is not. I believe he was sincere in his
insistence, not being a Rover person. Even 1967 is too early for this
example as it has the later style transmission shift knob. Inquire
about the VIN (it may be just fine), but be aware that an illegally
imported car doesn't ever become legal. My brain is getting old and I
don't remember things the way I should.

Roveretardedly,
Kent K.

Hi Rovernetters,

Well, I couldn't resist a P5B Coupe so close to home so I went to see it
this morning. My impressions:

- Straight and original, but tired. Rust in both ends of both
rockers/sills. Possibly some rust at the base of the windshield, it was a
bit hard to tell. I think those of you in the UK would probably consider
the rust very minor. Has been partly repainted at some time and some of the
paint is checked and crazed. Needs lots of body rubber.
- Leather is surprisingly still flexible, but has shrunk and split seams.
Interior generally tired, in need of full replacement.
- New or rebuilt steering box is installed but column is not connected, and
the pitman arm seems to have gone AWOL.
- Engine is free but car has obviously not run in many years. Mechanical
condition unknown. Air cleaner is in the trunk (aren't they always?) but
looks intact otherwise.
- Chrome trim is fair, with a bit of pitting. Bumpers are a bit bent,
probably repairable. Grille is missing some slats, though I have a spare.
- Lots of bits and pieces in the trunk, some of which are for other Rovers.

- Webasto roof needs new fabric but the bones look decent. I didn't try to
open it.
- Would undoubtedly need complete brake system rebuild to make it a driver.

A question for you folks across the pond: Based on this description, what
would the likely value of this car be in its home market? It is a
right-hand-drive car, by the way, not LHD. With an asking price of $1500,
(about 750 pounds at current exchange rate) should I be turning up tomorrow
with cash in hand, or should I be running the other way even if the car was
free?

All input appreciated -

thanks,

Geoff

Geoff, I'd by pass this car, way too many issues and
costs. It would take lot's of money and time to get
right. It would still be a rhd, if you don't mind,
that would be a non-issue. It would still be a low
valued car to everyone, other than to us on this list
as well. Yet, costs as much as an Austin Healey to
restore, but yet return only a third of the
investment. Of course this isn't why we buy Rovers to
begin with. If you do get it, I wish you all the luck.

Geoff

In the interests of full disclosure if you decline I'll probably make
an offer for it - SWMBO is not just going to tolerate a P5B coupe but
is actually really enthusiastic

I would suggest if you do go with it you'll be restoring it because
you want to enjoy the process of restoration - you'll never recover
the money you spend on putting it back together (though that's not the
reason many of us are here for the most part). In my mind this is the
sort of project car that is a good candidate for a sympathetic
modernisation with things like an overdrive autobox and upgraded
brakes- I wouldn't do it a to a good original car, but once you have
the car down to the bare bones there's going to be precious little
original about it when it's all back together

If you just want a running P5B it will probably be cheaper to buy a
roadworthy car in the UK or the perhaps the Netherlands with the rust
already removed and ship it over.

The price is about in line with what a running but tatty example with
some rust and a perhaps a few months remaining on the MoT might go
for in the UK - I've been looking for one myself and have a fair idea
of the market. A non-runner should be less unless it was particularly
low mileage and well kept; my guess might be #450 odd for a complete
car in the condition described. A good roadworthy car with a few mild
cosmetic issues will go for #4000 up onto really silly money for a
show car with history

The pattern of the rust sound pretty typical for any P5 - most of of
it is no more difficult than any other car if you are either MIG
capable or have a competent panel beater available and you can get
repair panels for most of the tricky bits. Now, with that said, the
big problem is likely to be the rust around the windscreen; while you
can get replacement/repair panels the whole area is very tricky and
needs a really competent body shop and or a lot of patience to make it
all better again. If the rust has got to the surface in this area
then it's almost certainly further inside the structure - it's
usually the result of the windscreen leaking and water getting down
inside so the damage is done by the time it starts to show on the
shiny parts.

The mechanicals are straightforward; there's none of the suspension
fanciness and braking complexity of the P6. Something will need to be
fixed for sure, but none of it requires any special expertise except
possibly the rear axle

The interior... old leather can often be resuscitated and restitched
- you'd be surprised at what hide food can bring back to life; carpet
sets are available but the niggly little things like switch gear and
interior trim can be hard to find except on from the breakers. IIRC
the wood trim was polished so two coats of Varathane just won't make
the grade

Hi Linus,
The engine in your Land Rover 109 is, for all intents and purposes,
identical to the P4 110. I almost bought a 109 like yours in El Paso a
couple of years ago. They were produced almost exclusively for the
North American market. But I guess you know that already.

There are relatively few P4 110's in North America, but the suffix b
Westlake head is found on the 3 litre engines of many P5 Mk. II's. The
Mk.II engine differs from the 2.6 litre P4 110 engine only in stroke.
Ruth Burgess at All British Cars in Vancouver, B.C., can probably obtain
any parts you need and is quite familiar with this engine. If you want
to order something from the UK., J. R. Wadhams has an on-line catalogue
and on-line ordering. Parts for this engine are readily available, but
expensive.

What do you need for your head? I have an extra head, but I'll have to
look to see if it's a suffix b or c. I will be away from my computer
until Friday and won't be able to respond until then.

I also have the original Land Rover Parts Book Supplement that deals
with this engine. I don't need it and would be happy to part with it
reasonably. This and the contemporary P4 and P5 parts manuals will
allow a part number by part number comparison. If there is a particular
interchange you would like to explore, I do have these manuals as well
and would be happy to look something up for you.

Roverly,
Kent Kinard
