[ROVERNET - UK] Bad news, Good news, Bad news

Hello ALL,

First the Bad news I was pretty excited to receive my P5b Coupe 4 weeks or
so back but upon inspection found that the car was not what I had hoped for.
The previous owner had not been completely honest and the car was not
original paint and was not rust free.

Oh well live and learn

I had already entered the Concours de Elegance held at the British Invasion
in Stowe Vermont and considered dropping out but decided that I was going to
get the car straight before the show. So with in days of receiving the car
it went off to my body shop. Over the next 2 and half weeks the car was
striped body work repaired painted all stainless reworked and most of the
Chrome replaced (Lucky I already had a set redone) So this past Thursday and
Friday My son Curtis and I along with 2 guys from my body shop worked 15
hours a day to get her back together. Finally at 11:30 PM this past Friday
night we set out for the 4 hour drive to Stowe Vermont for the show the
following morning.

It was miserable day of Rain and Mud and even though we had entered my
wife's Bugeye we choose only to bring in the Coupe and the 3500S in.
It was so bad even awards were suspended until the next day Sunday.

Now the Good news!

Even with out my nagging The Invasion opened up a Rover Saloon class for the
people's choice and a total of four Rovers entered. A really nice TC 2000 of
Earl Moffet's and his Mark 3 P5. A SD1 in outstanding condition and our
3500S my son Curtis entered. Earl took first place with his P5 saloon and
the SD1 took second place.

Great conversations took place and everyone has agreed to coordinate more
Rover participation in the coming months and next year.

Sunday came and it was beautiful day the kind of day that it should have
been the day before. We got there and decided just to go and listen to the
awards without bringing in the cars. We got in and the guy next to us during
the show gave us such a hard time that we had not brought the car in we went
back out and brought in the Coupe.

Well I would have never guessed that among all the beautiful cars in the
Concours event that that the Coupe would win its class and come in first. I
was hoping for a third place. So a Rover got it's due and in the states no
less! TWO P5s a Saloon and a Coupe took first place in the same show!!!

Later the P5b came through again on the way home I was trailering it and my
son was driving the 3500S when we got about 2 miles from the show grounds
the P6 died we attempted a fix but for whatever reason it would barely run
with out the pedal pushed to the floor we decided after a bit Curtis would
have to drive the P5B home (Maybe he planed this I think he knows more then
he is letting on) But she drove home like a champ.

We are all tired and wondering if this was all worth it all but decided that
first place was worth it although my wife is reserving her comments for
later.

Hope all are well and planning to get out to a show with your Rover

Dirk

Hello Rovernetters,
Here's all the dope on what cylinders for what LandRovers.
Late 86" and all 88" vehicles use the same cylinders and yes they are
different at all corners. The difference is the size front to rear (fronts
being larger in bore diameter) and the angle at which the brake line
enters them.

The 109" vehicles use a different cylinder at each wheel also with
the fronts being unique to 109s and the rears being the same as the 88"
fronts. Here's the final scoop. The the 109" vehicles with the 6 cylinder
engine use different again front cylinders but still use the 88" fronts on
their rears.

If you have the original cylinders on the car they are made of alloy
are are infinetly honeable and thereby rebuidable. Just pop the shoes and
open up the cylinders on the car. Hone them right in place clean them out
well and pop in new rubbers. Will work for a very long time. I've done
hundreds this way, never a problem. Just make sure that the bleeder screws
are free before you rebuild, they freeze often.

    Here are the Girling numbers:

    88 " LHF 390073 LHR 390015
          RHF 390072 RHR 390014
          KITS SP2051 ( 2 wheels) SP1215 ( 2 wheels)

109" LHF 390360 LHR Same as 88" fronts
RHF 390361 RHR Same as 88" rears
         KITS SP2006 ( does 2 wheels)

   109" 6 cyl, LHF 64674107
                 RHF 64674108
                 Kit SP2189 ( 2 wheels )

Depending where you get your shoes from they may come packaged side to
side or by axle set . We used to order them by wheel then they started
packaging by front or rear axle.

Hope this helps. I can supply you with what ever you wish if you want. (
so can lots of other sources) Drop me a note if you need more info of
anything.

Free to somebody on the list

Rover V8 in a 3500S in Maryland. The car is pretty much stripped (although
it still has its seats), but you can have the engine and the rest free if
you can haul the whole thing away soon (the car rolls, but has no doors).
The engine has about 85k on it and has been sitting for a loooong time. I
dont know if it turns, but probably would with some shots of Marvel Mystery
Oil or some such. I cant be bothered to try, so that is one of the reasons
its free! It is attached to an automatic transmission. Let me know if you
want to tow it home after the MGs on the Rocks get together in Baltimore. I
am about an hour and a half from there, in Dickerson MD (20842). Or you can
come by anytime.

Laine,

Looking through the Rover directory (mainly US cars) that John Burkhard
and I maintain, I see only the one owned by Jose Scoseria in Maryland,
though there are several P4's listed without details of the model or
year and some of these could be 80's. That is out of over 250 Rover
cars listed in the US, so it turns out that there aren't many 80's
around. There must be others around too that are not listed.

Those P4 100's, on the other hand, are a dime a dozen. :-) We actually
had two blue 1960 100's (including ours) at the second day of the June
Rover get together in New England. There are several other 100's listed
in the directory, though not all are blue...

I had one a few years ago and sold it on to a gent in
Austin. It was very rough.
There was a green one in Tuscon a few years back...lady
owner, too. Both these cars were RHD.

Where are the 80s? Where are the 60's?!?

Kent can't remember the 60's. He was a with-it Man of the Cloth for the
Cause. They called him Rev Rainbow, back then. It was the Age of
Aquarious in south Texas, and he was right-on with the right hand drives...

Face it... 80s were under powered... 60s were too.

My wife has a picture of me with shoulder length hair, a
beard, a shirt with four inch wide lapels and red, white
and blue striped bell-bottom trousers...and that was while
I was in seminary. We ran George McGovern's presidential
campaign in Dallas from a dorm room. Peace, brother.

Rovereminiscently,
Kent K.
