Undercut is essential to allow the brushes to contact properly on the armature.
If it is not undercut, they ride high on the insulation instead.  This limits the current in the armature, and thus the generator output.
P4 books show it well.

That's an excellent point Paul makes.
That is a difference between a generator cleaning and
a generator rebuilding.  It's a harder job and you
need the correct equipment.

The electrical segments on an armature need that break
in current to create the electricity flow.
