The bearings in the heater motor are probably phosphor bronze - a  
reddish  brown metal. Ideally they should be soaked in light oil for  
24 hours so that the oil actually penetrates the crystalline  
structure of the metal. Application of 10 weight oil over a period of  
hours will do much the same if you don't want to remove the bearings.
The problem with grease is that it may not penetrate the metal and  
will not lubricate the bearing for so long.
