I converted my auto SD1 to manual some years back. When I removed the
oil plug, I found that it had a magnetic insert that had collected a
certain amount of metal debris. I cleaned that off several times as I
flushed out the gearbox and picked up a few more bits each time until
there seemed to be no more turning up. It was mostly minor stuff. After
the gearbox was installed, it ran just fine, was quiet and shifted
smoothly during the couple of years that I drove it. So, personally, I
wouldn't panic and write it off if you find some junk in there. It's
probably fine. (After all, the LT77 ain't exactly a Swiss watch...)
As I recall, there was a way to put a cut-off hex wrench into an
electric drill and use it to test the function of the oil pump. This
actually worked for me.
