[ROVERNET - UK] P6 speedo

Spring is here now and I have been working on the 1968 P6. I lost the speedo 
the other day and normally when the cable  breaks that the red stripe that 
indicates the speed disappears. But this time it went to the right 
indicating a speed of  120. Has anyone been inside the speedo to fix such a 
problem. I have a spare that works but it is rough shape. Also are there 
after market boot (zippered?) that cover the rear half shafts? Thanks in
