Actually they breathed out the half shafts (holes in the middle), and yes
could lose oil there.  My TC was like that (68).

Early Rover 2000s didn't have a breather on the final
drive. Pressure was created inside the drive. When the
oil seal weakened, oil disappeared out the drive
shafts.  Could it be that no oil in this person's
final drive caused overheating and damage to the
gears?  

What if the old type drive was replaced by another old
type drive?

Vern has some service bulletins and might be able to
identify the date when oil breathers were retrofitted.

Just wondering.
