The one thing we haven't dwelt on is the coolant circulation.  TR Spares 
are correct.  If you have an SD1 or earlier (non-Land Rover) 
application, you should have, at some point, added a bleed cap high up 
in the cooling system.  All the late Classics have a metal pipe in the 
heater hose line with a plug very high in the engine compartment.  If 
you don't bleed the cooling system at this point when you fill, you will 
get air pockets (or steam pockets and hot spots.  The cooling system is 
not well ballanced either, tending to pull hot water from one side and 
then the other instead of both simultaneously.  Smokey Yunick discovered 
this early on in his research on the V6 and developed and alternate 
outlet on the front of each head and a "Y" pipe to a remote thermostadt. 
  You couldn't do this easily on a street vehicle because of the 
accessory brackets.

Again, I believe this is correct.  It is also true of North American 
(and maybe the Australian) SD1's using the 4CU injection when running at 
continuous high speed.  This system runs lean at high RPM.

I only talk to Dan occassionally and haven't heard him express an 
opinion verbally or in writing.  He has his own ideas about the Pegasus 
block, doing a 4.8 litre version using the Buick 300 crank and Ford 255 
cid pistons.  To get better choices of main bearings he has the 
crossbolt blocks line honed to take 300 Buick shells though the 300 and 
4.0/4.6 mains are the same journal size.

I actually used 4.0 pistons in my 4.6 to get a significant boost in 
compression.

The weight difference is 85 lbs.  I'll just do without the A/C and drive 
only in the dead of winter.  If I wasn't runing the T400 auto behind the 
310 (I used 3.0 litre V6 flat top pistons and a 3.8" bore), I could have 
saved some of that 85 lbs. by going to a T-5 trans instead of the LT77.

Agreed again. I have 300 heads on my 4.6 (although they are basicly 
stock).  The heads on the 310 are AL 300 but with 1.7" intakes and 1.5" 
exhaust, bulleted guides, and smaller (VW) stems.

Dan has built a 5.6 litre (300 block/350 crank) using Jeep/AMC pistons 
and 300 rods.  I have the pieces to do the same but with early 350 rods 
and late 3800 V6 pistons (VERY short pin to crown).  I was stuck for the 
special 340/early 350 rod bolts which are as extinct as the sabertooth 
tiger.  Dan didn't have them either and wound up grinding on the bolt 
heads to get clearance between the rod bolts and the camshaft.  I have 
looked for some new bolts for years.  Today I was browsing the ARP 
catalogue and they are listed! ('68-'72 Buick 350). (Later 350's use a 
very heavy cast, cap screw type rod similar to the 3.8 V6.)

I got a call the other day from a fellow (Richard Potter) who is looking 
to produce an aluminium Buick 350 head.  He is in the casting business 
and does AL Cadillac 500 heads and has just finished an AL head for 
GM3800's, so he certainly has the credentials.  He feels the Wildcat 
heads are too expensive and that he can do some much cheaper.  Who knows 
what the future holds?
