[ROVERNET - UK] Rover P6B rear brake hoses

I have to replace the rear brake hoses to make my car roadworthy and have 
had different opinions on how best to do it.
I have been told to take the calipers off to do the job.
Alternatively I have been told that I can release the four bolts at the rear 
of the diff and it will go down a few inches, enought to acess and change 
the two hoses.
The manula is strangely silnet on this
Anyone done it recently and have some advice?
