[ROVERNET - UK] Junk etc.

Hi all,

One thing I do like about the Net mails is the ability for me to quickly
scan my Outlook preview and see what the subjects being discussed are.
I really like the informal pub style banter and don't mind too much when it
goes a little off track. I also think it is a judgment call by the moderator
as to when things are getting out of hand or just not the place for the kind
of discussion taking place.

I am really looking forward to the new site Stephen is working on and think
it will be a great addition. But I would not want to loose or trade the
rovernet as it is now.

Hey how about some replies to my 07 Rover get together?????
Dirk

Being old and feeble-minded, I don't remember that much about Graeme
other than that I liked him personally in mail we exchanged, but that
his postings drove me up the wall. I don't really remember why, but seem
to recall there being a certain "talking down to the lower caste" flavor
to most of his stuff. I don't think that was the real issue, though. If
you remember, someone actually hacked into the Rovernet sending in what
amounted to spam and causing the list to be shut down completely, at one
point. I think Graeme's removal had more to do with his active support
of those two guys and his abusive postings directed at the people who
volunteer to do the work of providing such a wonderful free service.

Speaking as an RSTCA guy, one needs to remember that were sitting around
talking in the RCCC's living room, and one needs to remember one's
manners. The two or three shown the door really forgot theirs.

Al,

That scares me, too. Who needs that? There are lots of other lists
designed for that purpose.

One important thing about the Rovernet has always been that it is
accessible to people with very simple hardware. In fact, you don't even
need a graphics car to participate and receive email. This may be less
important now than it was ten years ago when there were definitely
people out there who didn't have the equipment to surf the web. I think
a guy with a 300 baud Commodore 64 in Liberia could participate if he
had access to electricity and a phone line. I still prefer the system
Rovernet uses due to its simplicity and accessibility.

One of my favourite places is the P6 Rover Owners'
Club forum in the UK. I made the link easier for me
and a service to others by creating a hotlink on our
website under "Communicate".
In that forum, a moderator could set subsections for
the various Rover models, or subsections for general
chat, subsections on electrical, engine, transmission,
etc., etc.
I have set up a forum with the same software as the P6
ROC for a Teachers' Association here in BC. If there
was an interest in the forum, that is something I
could easily do. However, it might be more fun for
interested Rovernetters to join the P6 ROC forum as it
is well established and has a good archive and an
interesting variety of subsections.

It's good enough... The key here is who owns it, maintains it and pays the
ISP for it to be up to you how you set it up. That buddy of yours with the
commodore 64 and a 300baud modem? He wouldn't be interested in a 2000SC
restoration project will he ;-)

Per the recent dicusssion on what belongs on the list,
on another list I am on there is alot of interesting
info, but what doesn't pertain to cars (in this case
Jensens) is preceded in the heading with "OT-" So
those inclined know to skip it.

BTW - I am fairly new to the list, but have one
request. I would enjoy the list more if people could
respond to their digest mailing without all the
previous day's messages at the bottom of thiers.
Thanks

George

George,
I couldn't agree more. On the bottom of each digest
message there is an appeal:
"When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is
more specific than "Re: Contents of rovernet
digest..."

Also, when a digest is kept intact for replying, the
message is quite long and so that places an extra
burden on those who pay for telephone dialup or who
have a restricted inbox size.

A person replying from the digest need only:
* click reply
* now they have the ability to modify or change the
subject heading
* they also can delete most of the digest except the
pertinent few lines for context

We live in hope that the digest users will help us out
..... sigh ......

Rear brakes are my forte.
Admittedly there is no easy way.
