Steve,
I run 2200 standard pistons on each of my two
vehicles.  The only modifications made, if IRC, is
that the small ends of the con rods were planed
thinner with the new bushes inserted prior and a 2200
head gasket is now used.  There was no valve
interference in the conversion.

Could you have a broken valve spring?  There is one
spring inside the other for each valve. Increases the
odds :-(
