[ROVERNET - UK] box bearings

I have rebuilt two P6 2000 boxes and started with a specialist bearing supplier
(SKF) i think. They measured each one up and found a generic part both roller
and needle with one exception (the unusually thin thrust bearing). On a
3500 this bearing is relatively standard and i would assume that you would
have little trouble. Several years ago the lot cost $600 AUD. Do you have
a friendly mechanic who could order what you have selected at trade price?
The logic is that car manufacturers source their bearings from generic manufacturers
and it is not in anyones interest to have a special bearing made with therefore
a comparatively short run. Bearing dealers have access to these specialist
manufacturers with cross referenced measurements etc. They also typically
stock oil seals and large hammers in case the frustration gets the better
of clients. Cheers
