Peter,
Check the integrity of the Lucas/Lucar connectors
under the steering column for the Blue/White wires. 
If you've inadvertently dislodged a particular
Blue/White wire, you would have low beam and not high
beam.  In all this trouble, does the high beam warning
light come on when you select the high beam position?
